Built by local people and opened in 1934, the lido is an important part of the cultural history of the village. Locally it is known as Baths Brynaman or The Baths. Treasured memories were created there over the years.
The planned refurbishment will be sensitive to the original design of the pool and aims to keep unique features such as the turnstile and changing booths with sympathetic adaptions to increase access and ease of use. We want to bring back that Sapphire Pool* that was built by the community, for the community and make it available to all.
Brynaman Lido Committee began work in 2014 to research, plan and get support for the refurbishment. In November 2019 we signed an Asset Transfer agreement with Carmarthenshire County Council to bring the lido back into community ownership.
We aim to use renewable energy and the latest technology to refurbish, rebuild and manage the facility including the use of sustainable materials, air source heating, solar energy and bore hole water sourcing which will all go towards making this an exemplar project.
In 2022/23, thanks to funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund, Cwarter Bach Community Council and research by Josh Jones, Architectural Advisor, we were able to commission Rural Office, heritage architects based in Carmarthenshire, to develop a Project Viability study.
The resulting report provided us with a vision for the future that is being tested with the local community in public events and our community engagement programme. Feedback and ideas will be included as we move forward to the next stage of Project Development.
